Understanding The Adoption Triangle/Triad

By: Liz Berland, LPC, SEP

The Adoption Triangle, often referred to as The Adoption Triad, is a concept that plays a pivotal role in the world of adoption. It encompasses three key groups of individuals whose lives intersect, ultimately forming a forever family.

  1. Birth or Biological Parents: The first group comprises the birth or biological parents. Even if one or both parents are unknown, their presence is profoundly significant within the adoption triangle. Children placed for adoption will forever share a connection with their birth parents, shaping their identity and roots.

  2. Adoptive Parents: The second group represents the adoptive parent or parents. These individuals take on the primary role of nurturing, caring for, and guiding the child as they grow. Their love and support play a fundamental role in the child's life, akin to any biological parent. Regardless of whether it's a closed or open adoption, adoptive parents acknowledge the unique qualities inherited from the birth parents, which may contribute to a lasting connection.

  3. Children Placed for Adoption: The heart of the adoption triad is the child placed for adoption. They bridge the gap between two families, carrying traits and characteristics from both sides. This eternal connection is a testament to the profound impact that both birth and adoptive families have on the child's life.

A birth mom, specifically, is the woman who gave birth to a child, distinct from the child's adoptive mother. It's crucial to dispel the stigma surrounding birth mothers who are considering placing their baby for adoption. These women often require emotional support and guidance during their pregnancy journey.
